In 1971 Aldo Vaira joined Suolo e Salute, becoming a pioneer of organic farming in Piedmont while working the family land. The 1972 vintage was harsh. Facing the very real possibility of leaving the bunches on the vine, Aldo did not give up and vinified his first vintage. The energy of thid beginning is collected in the note that is still written on the first page of the Marescalchi, the university enology manual: imagination at work.
This imagination is matched by curiosity and willingess to question established wisdom: massal selection for the Coste & Fossati (1979), the Freisa cultivated in Bricco delle Viole (1980), the first Rhine Riesling planted in Piedmont (1985), the against-the-grain choice of renouncing to the excessive use of French wood to devote himself instead to a style of finesse and elegance. Thus Aldo earned the title of “the most modern of the traditionalists and the most traditional of the modernists”.
Today, the family has 40 hectares under vine. The estate is steeped in tradition. Barolos are macerated for 20 to 30 days depending on the vintage. Wines are typically matured in large neutral Slavonian casks. The holdings in Bricco delle Viole are the prized vineyards of the estate, planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. It is a very cool terroir with open exposure and breezy conditions. Their holdings in the Barolo commune are: Fossati, Coste de Vergne, and La Volta. Recently acquired vineyards in the commune of Sino (just outside Barolo DOCG, next to Serralunga) make a gorgeous Langhe Nebbiolo.
G.D. Vajra produces wines of sublime artistry and craft, making use of every technique in its proper measure, e.g., the decision need not be whether or not to do whole-cluster fermentation but, instead, how much of it. Today G.D. Vajra is recognized for their efforts: their G.D Vajra 2017 Barolo Ravera was #5 in the Wine Enthusiast‘s list of the best 100 wines of 2021; Vajra was one of the top wineries of 2020 and 2021 in Wine & Spirits; the Wine Spectator has included G.D. Vajra‘s wines in its top 100 wines of the year several times. The accolades continue.
