Clos des Fous - Subsollum Itata Pinot Noir 2018

Clos des Fous is Pedro Parra's collaboration with Francois Massoc, Paco Leyton, and Albert Cussen, with a focus on rediscovering and celebrating great unknown terroirs throughout Chile. Well worn leather, medicinal cherry, wild plums, scrubby herbs fill this medium-bodied wine, smoothed with time in bottle, but bound with sticky tannins reflective of the intense UV in Chile. Thankfully, the acidity is potent and lofty, courtesy of the chilly Pacific breezes and mix of volcanic and calcareous soils. The lingering finish breaths kirsch. It is nearly indistinguishable as pinot noir, but somehow entirely recognizable as Chile = a great result.
